The Storm Warriors of Tea House
preserve and promote the local tea house culture.
PROJECT BACKGROUND
Originated in Guangzhou, the Chinese tea house culture evolved into a unique local style after years of development in Hong Kong. In fact, its Dim sum and steamer making techniques were even featured in the first Intangible Cultural Heritage Inventory of Hong Kong accepted by the Government and promulgated in June 2014. This design project is based on Chinese chess and features visual elements of the tea house culture.
PROJECT CONCEPT
The incorporation of the concept of Chinese chess to the tea house culture is not only motivated by the fact that they are both part of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage of China, but also the connection between their grading systems. We replaced chess pieces with dim sum dishes such as barbecued pork buns, soup dumplings and steamed meatballs. The dim sum ordering sheets serve as the record of 'capturing' under the classification system of tea house. Moreover, the shape of dim sum steamer baskets is applied to the packaging design of the board game, while the traditional steamer making technique is represented by the use of paper art. Players will be able to experience the tea house culture by unpacking the steamer and surprise by the dazzling pieces of dim sum inside.
